The magic began with the Paper team converging on Eugenia Sheppard Award winner Kim Hastreiter's downtown apartment. The posse included Paper co-founder David Hershkovits, other Paper personalities, Kim's mom and sister, actor Matthew Modine and his gorgeous wife Cari.
Our two-car caravan (Kim et famille in a Jaguar and the rest of us in an Escalade) rolled up to Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center to find a bottleneck of fashion stars creating a star-studded traffic jam. We cut off Anna Wintour and pulled up alongside Ashley and Mary Kate Olsen who had rolled down the windows for a little pre-show smoke. Also arriving to the red carpet were Zac Posen with Devon Aoki, Fabiola Beracasa in threeASFOUR, Alexander Wang and his mom and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Being the entourage of one of the night's big honorees we were seated in star-studded paradise in front of SJP, behind Michael Kors, Caroline Kennedy and Anna Wintour.
After CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg made opening remarks, Brooke Shields, an old friend of Kim's and Paper's, came out and made an incredibly sweet speech introducing Kim. Kim emerged resplendent in her favorite color combo of chartreuse and magenta. Kim's speech was heartfelt with a little kick of spice (read the text of her speech here). When she got back to her seat Michael Kors' seatmate turned around to tell Kim "I loved your speech. That was punk rock." The seat mate was Gwyneth Paltrow.
The awards are the Academy Awards of fashion and it was a parade of stars -- Jessica Biel, Anthony Mackie, Rachel Weisz -- and glamourpusses -- the night's sponsor Nadja Swarovski, Aerin Lauder, Carmen Kass, Doutzen Kroes -- and all the designers -- Donna Karan, Michael Kors (winner of the Geoffrey Beene LIfetime Achievement Award), Carolina Hererra, Marc Jacobs and Prabal Gurung.
After a yummy supper and mingling the parade of town cars zipped down to the Boom Boom Room for the Swarovski after party. Cuties carried on, rubbed elbows and kicked up their Jimmy Choo'd heels until the wee hours. Matthew Modine beamed and chatted with Fern Mallis and Jeffrey Banks and wife Cari showed off the dancing skills that had many in attendance calling her the best dancer in Manhattan! The Paper crew lasted til about 1.30 which isn't as late as some kids but then we had an editorial meeting the next morning.
