Out now on Blu-ray is A Star Is Born (Warner Brothers). Watching the new stunning remastered and digitally restored 1954 George Cukor directed A Star Is Born on Blu-ray is a revelation. This rags-to-riches Hollywood story of a young singer Esther Blodgett (Judy Garland) who is catapulted to stardom thanks to the alcoholic famous actor Norman Maine (James Mason), was Judy Garland's triumphant return to stardom and it embodied all her strengths --singing and acting, not to mention James Mason's moving performance as the lush has-been movie star. Judy definitely got robbed that year by not winning best actress which she truly deserved. It's a great sprawling glitzy melodrama, wonderfully directed by Cukor, with fabulous musical numbers (like The Man I Love and Born In A Trunk). Warner Brothers has gone to great lengths restoring the full, elongated, version (with restored scenes and outtakes). Just to watch Judy Garland filming "The Man I Love" sequence in multiple outfits with different takes is amazing. And the other hours of extras are illuminating and fun. I recall watching Casablanca on Blu-ray at a friend's house and it was the reason i rushed out to buy a player and once again Warner Brothers delivers spectacularly with this beautiful two-disc set.
