One of PAPER's favorite designers, Jeremy Scott (who styled the cover of our upcoming April issue....you won't be disappointed), stopped by our offices yesterday for a visit. (That's Scott with the PAPER staff above!*) We asked our trusty Facebook and Twitter followers to send questions for Scott, and one query particularly piqued our interest: "What does Jeremy Scott think of Hot Topic knocking off his work?" The work in question is a pair of Scott's flip-out "Mickey" sunglasses that he designed for Linda Farrow, and which were worn by Lady Gaga, along with Scott's "Mouse Trap" dress, in her video for "Paparazzi." Moody teen clothier Hot Topic recently started selling a strikingly similar pair of flip-out sunglasses in their stores. The Internet has taken note. Here's what he had to say about it:
I understand that that's what goes on to a degree, but it's sad. It'smy work. It's like illegal downloading. One part of me is flattered, tohave such an impact, but the other side of me thinks 'This isn't fair, they're taking something that's mine.'Scott added, however, that he's "always designing new things" and that he's planning on turning the other cheek. But before he can get back to making new creations, he's off to Paris for Fashion Week before embarking on a mini tour of Asia, with planned trips to Hong Kong, Beijing, Tokyo, and Seoul. Hopefully Hot Topic minds their manners in the meantime.
