Out this week on DVD is Perry Mason Season 4: Volume 2 (CBS/Paramount). Raymond Burr is back as the wily counselor Perry Mason in this crackling good mystery series that played on CBS in the 1960s. With his devoted secretary Della Street (Barbara Hale), his detective friend Paul Drake (William Hopper) and cranky opponent D.A Hamilton Burger (William Talman), the formula for success was locked in by this season. But for cult film fans this box set is a gold mine. Gloria Talbott (wife of the alien in I Married A Monster From Outer Space) stars in The Case Of The Angry Dead Man, and this episode also costars Carol Ohmart (House On Haunted Hill). Jason Evers (the fiendish scientist with his wife's head kept alive in his basement in The Brain That Wouldn't Die) stars as a shady businessman in The Case Of The Difficult Detour. Robert H. Harris (the mad make-up artist in How To Make A Monster) stars as a man framed for setting fire in an art warehouse in The Case Of The Torrid Tapestry. Faith Domergue (a Howard Hughes discovery and lead in This Island Earth) stars in The Case Of The Guilty Clients. And Ann Helm (Nightmare In Wax, The Magic Sword and famously fired at behest of Joan Crawford in Strait Jacket) stars in The Case Of The Duplicate Daughter. Great fun.
