Skingraft's Spring Line Soars at the Geffen Contemporary
By J. Everette Perry
Downtown Los Angeles' Geffen Contemporary Museum at MOCA hosted last night's Skingraft show, and it was the perfect space for an event that turned out to be a dazzling piece of performance art. Designers Jonny Cota and Katie Kay have transformed their Spring 2010 line from one-of-a-kind garments to a ready-to-wear collection, and the line soared with pieces inspired by Amelia Earhart and images of birds in flight. Skingraft's new look was was echoed in their models, too -- some of whom hid their long locks under wind-swept, Earhart-esque bobs. Cota was kind enough to answer some questions for PAPERMAG at the event. Check out the quick Q&A below!
Who would you love to dress?
I would love to dress Yoko Ono, I would turn her into an effortless freak.
What's a movie that gives you inspiration?
Paris is Burning, the drag culture really paves the way for outrageous fashion while owning it.
What was the last song you downloaded?
'Picture Plane,' I played it during the show. There is something beautiful and unexpected about it.
