"An ejaculation of lifestylizations, DAAAAAAAAAArling!" This is how Catherine Baba described herself when asked to do so in five words. In truth, there are no words to describe her. It would be a mistake to just call her a stylist... which she is, but it's more like style just exudes from her every breath. A mistake to call her Australian... which she also is, but she has been living in Paris for nearly 15 years. You cannot speak of her without mentioning her unimaginably chic personal style, but what many don't know is that her love and knowledge of fashion is only rivaled by her obsession with music. She is usually one of the last to leave the discotecheque floor and you can't help to think that you're witnessing someone channelling a Nancy Cunard gypsy peppered with Poiret orientalism at Studio 54! She once infamously borrowed a chandelier right off a ceiling to complete her outfit and DJed the whole evening with it perched precariously on her head!
One evening while tearing up the town with her, Catherine limps over to me with one broken stiletto and says, "Daaaarling what am I going to do?" I realized she wasn't asking how she was going to get home in such a state, but instead was trying to figure out how she could keep on dancing. Without hesitation I ran to the bar borrowed a knife, chopped the silk straps off my dress and tied her shoe onto her foot... she managed to maneuver the dancefloor to the very end! Catherine likes to call them "floor-shows" but then again she dances to her own tune and speaks her own language which I like to call Baba-isms. "J'aaad....doooore, J'adore!!!" she exclaims after nearly everything "esque...ation....age....anything to continue the momentism of the glorificationalisation.... More is never enough!"
Additionally, her collection of vintage Yves Saint Laurent is of mythic porportions. "Pleeeeease... she's endless devotionalz!" When prodded she reveals that she has acquired close to 300 pieces. She speaks of going to his funeral and clutches her heart with her heavily bangled arms. I notice she's wearing the latest YSL Tribute stiletto. "Stefano [Pilati]'s injections have completely fluidified the continuation."
A witty storyteller, she will regale you with outrageous tales, unassumingly mentioning the biggest designers, photographers and stylists as if she were casually talking about the weather. Diane Pernet calls her "the most fashionable woman in Paris." When and I asked Baba which women she reveres most, she said, "Grace, Diana, LouLou, Maxime, Katoucha, Mari, Betany, Irina, Christine." I guess from now on I will only use one name when I speak of her. BABA might be a petite 5"2 in her tallest YSL shoes, but look up to her I do!
