1. Tommy Boy Records' founder Tom Silverman is reviving his New Music Seminar in a collab with New York University. Originally launched in NYC in 1980 -- just as Billboard Magazine's Disco Convention was fading and DIY rock was on the rise -- the seminar was soon showcasing up-and-coming acts like Madonna and Run-D.M.C. at the Paradise Garage (1984). NMS 2009 will be a one-day affair held at the Steinhardt Skirball Center on July 21 with $99 advance tickets available here.

In addition to cash, winners receive a painting or print created by 10 NY artists including Stephen Hannock, Robert Mangold and David Salle.
