We love Miami (and warm weather) but we're happy to be back in NYC. Here's a taste of what happened last week:
1. The Mondrian South Beach (pictured above) looks like it's going to be the club/hotel of the season. Though designed by Marcel Wanders, most of the opening crowds thought it was the work of Phillipe Starck. It is on the west side of South Beach with a vast outdoor area that faces the sunset and downtown, plus there's another branch of Asia de Cuba restaurant and a gigantic "vending machine" in the lobby that dispenses white bags that contain everything from razors to cars -- or at least a gift certificate for the latter.
2. The three-day music party and punk retrospective "Kill Your Idols" sponsored by Converse was the place to hang for all the locals. We caught an incredible set by Matt & Kim on Thursday (pictured below) and the band even designed a special shoe that they gave to all their fans for free. Congratulations to Dr. Romanelli and everybody at Converse for producing an event that combined music and art and managed to bring out more kids and fans than jaded art snobs.

3. Maybe it was only because our eyes were worn out from acres of art in two dimensions, but by the time we reached Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe's installation "Hello Meth Lab With a View" (pictured at top) we were totally blown away. Spread over several floors in a new condo building in Midtown Miami, the piece included everything from stuffed dogs to blown out rooms and boxes of Sudafed. We wonder if anyone bought it or if it was even for sale?
4. The best part of the Gansevoort South Beach is the new lounge called Louis on the ground floor behind the shark tank in the lobby. There was a midget dressed like Napoleon to greet you every night and mobs outside trying to get in. The people that went to the Florida Room in the Delano last year have moved over here -- except for the night of Grace Jones' "concert" on Wednesday (were she supposedly received a quick $300,000).
5. We loved the "It Ain't Fair" over on NW 7th Avenue and went back several times for A.R.E. Weapons, a party hosted by The Gossip and a screening of the film Death Bowl to Downtown. We even ran into Kaws one night and had an interesting conversation with The Ice Cream Man who drove his truck all the way from Long Beach, CA, to give everybody a free cone.
6. Thanks to Scion for a great sunset party in the Raleigh penthouse, Deitch Projects for a fantastic concert by The Gossip, Moncler for a tasty brunch and a chance to see a a giant "Toy" designed by Stuart Semple, and finally, to everybody at Zakarin PR (Destiny, Robert etc.) who hooked us up at the Angler's restaurant and invited us to what was the biggest party we attended all week at the Icon Brickell and Viceroy Hotel downtown. And, yes, the Brickell was designed by Mr. Starck.
