Design Miami opens this week (December 3 - 6, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily at Palm Court and 39th Street) in the city's downtown Design District. Moving from its usual base in the Moore Building, this fourth incarnation will be centered around a high-tech tent designed by New York architects Aranda/Lasch (see image above). "This year we decided to use our venue to make a bold architectural statement reflecting the future of design rather than the past," Ambra Medda, Design Miami's director, told the Financial Times. Brazilian brothers Umberto and Fernando Campana were selected the fair's Designers of the Year and were commissioned to create a VIP guest lounge in the tent. In PAPER's 2005 Design Issue, MoMA's curator of architecture and design Paula Antonelli described the Campana Brothers work as "intuitive and spontaneous, and they fully exploit the freedom of expression and experimentation provided today by technology."
