Word of Mouth

Red wine, it looks like your days as healthful alcohol darling are over. At his new apothecary-themed bar, Apothéke, esteemed Austrian barman Albert Trummer offers 250 cure-all cocktails infused with ingredients that go far beyond the grape to make you feel tip top. House-made remedies are concocted from the various extracts of roots and herbs, imported by Trummer from around the world, and are broken down into to several categories including stress relievers (lavender), painkillers (cayenne) and aphrodisiacs (champagne). A cocktail list with variations from each category included standouts like the Sparkling Star, an aptly named concoction of champagne, aloe, homemade bitters and fresh muddled starfruit (replaced by the more seasonal pineapple that night, but just as bright), and the Five Points, an ultra-aromatic combination of elderflower extract, hibiscus and cachaça. Both drinks were delicious, but any pronounced states of well-being were quickly counteracted by the arrival of the $15-per-drink bill. Décor-wise, Trummer and his partners have created a lounge-y dispensary with a vintage bent, complete with oil burning lamps, a crystal chandelier, tablecloths embroidered with mortals and pestals, and a vintage lottery wheel that will soon dispense free prescription orders for patrons celebrating birthdays. The room's centerpiece, however is the long marble bar -- lined with an arsenal of Erlenmeyer flasks, beakersand, crucibles –w here apothekers measure drams and scruples of their corrective potions with such deadly seriousness that, for a moment, one really believes their "prescriptions" aren't anything that, say, a few Brooklyn Lagers couldn't match in efficacy. But that's the fun of a place like Apothéke, and the devotion that led Trummer to spend 10 years researching and preparing for this venture, is evident in this highly-detailed, well-executed space.
