Here’s an offer you can’t refuse: The new DVD, The Godfather: The Coppola Restoration, a five disc set including the three Godfather films and two separate discs of extras. It’s hard to remember this now but Francis Ford Coppola was somewhat of a gamble to direct the adaptation of the popular Mario Puzo novel, and studio heads were unsure whether he could pull it off. The cast -- with Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, John Cazale, Diane Keaton and that memorable horse head -- all rose to the occasion. Then there’s the glorious cinematography by Gordon Willis -- lovingly restored so the browns and blacks hold on DVD -- and Nino Roto’s haunting score and you have an epic gangster movie, one which won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor (Brando) and Screenplay.

The Godfather Part II (1974) is proof that sequels can sometimes exceed their original. This prequel and fast-forward to the original story is a multileveled portrait of immigration, crime and family and so much more. Robert DeNiro is fantastic as a younger version of Don Corleone and Pacino is staggeringly here. A true American masterpiece.

Then there’s The Godfather Part III (1990). Oh well. But it might be more interesting to revisit this clunker now on DVD, as the extras on the disc are revealing and illuminating. Little nuggets -- like that the studio was pushing for Robert Redford to play Michael Corleone (just imagine!) and other struggles the film had coming across the finish line make this an invaluable addition to your DVD library.
