Word of Mouth

May is the last chance for shows to open before the Tony Awards. Here are five that hope to be in the competition.

TOP GIRLS
This is a revival of a Caryl Churchill masterpiece from the early '80s, set at the Top Girls Employment Agency in London. An ambitious business woman, in a male-dominated world, achieves results; but at a cost. James Macdonald directs an all-female cast, which includes a quartet of top-rated actors: Mary Catherine Garrison, Elizabeth Marvel, Martha Plimpton and Marisa Tomei. (See photos of the show above.)

Biltmore Theatre, 261 W. 47th St., (212) 239-6200. Previews Apr. 15, opens May 7.

BOEING BOEING
Boeing-Boeing is a 1960's sex comedy of errors by the very successful French playwright Marc Camoletti, that English director Matthew Warchus has reinvented for today. It involves a Parisian playboy (The West Wing's Bradley Whitford), who is able to juggle the affections of three flight attendants, with the aid of his housekeeper (star of many mediums, Christine Baranski), until an old pal (British classic actor Mark Rylance) shows up to bunk at his apartment. Two of the flight attendants will be played by Gina Gershon and Mary McCormack.

The Longacre Theatre, 220 W. 48th St., (212) 239-6200. Previews Apr. 19, opens May 4.

ENDGAME
Stage and screen actor John Turturro plays Hamm, a blind man, in one of Samuel Beckett's enigmatic one-acts, presumably about the end of humanity. Hamm, guided by his servant Clov, tries to make sense of things, while his parents, played by the amazing Elaine Stritch and the veteran Alvin Epstein, serve to annoy him. Andrei Belgrader directs.

Brooklyn Academy of Music, 651 Fulton St., (718) 636-4100. Previews Apr. 25, opens Apr. 30-May 18.

THE COUNTRY GIRL
This revival of Clifford Odets' classic backstage story follows a woman married to an actor who was once on top, but is now a down and out alcoholic, who finds himself offered a major role by an upcoming director. The cast features three well-known movie actors: Frances McDormand in the title role, the rarely-seen-on-stage Morgan Freeman as the actor and Peter Gallagher as the director. Mike Nichols directs.

The Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, 242 W. 45th St., (212) 239-6200. Previews Apr. 3, opens Apr. 27.

LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES
Les Liaisons Dangereuses, a play by Christopher Hampton, from an 18th century novel about cynical seduction, directed by Rufus Norris, stars Laura Linney and Britisher Ben Daniels. Linney plays the role of a pre-Revolution, French aristocrat femme fatale who, along with her male counterpart (Daniels) schemes to ruin the reputation of a younger woman, just for fun. The charming and already accomplished Mamie Gummer (Hunting and Gathering) plays the innocent victim. Passion and betrayal abound.

American Airlines Theatre, 227 W. 43rd St., (212) 719-3100. Previews Apr. 11, opens May 1.
