Artist Residency: Tony Just

Once a week, photographer Aubrey Mayer (you may recall the recent, glorious photos he took for us during New York Fashion Week) will take a portrait of one of his favorite artists and ask him/her a series of simple questions. Here is his first subject, Tony Just.

Aubrey Mayer: Where are you from?
Tony Just: Born at the Patuxent River Naval Base, Maryland. Moved to North Dakota after about a year.

AM: Where do you live now?
TJ: Downtown New York, on Fourth Ave.

AM: How did you become an artist?
TJ: Went to school: Chicago Art Institute + Hunter College

AM: What is the oddest job you've ever had?
TJ: Working for photographer Richard Kern. Followed a close second by selling used car batteries for dad.

AM: Who's your favorite non-living artist?
TJ: Georges Seurat

AM: What book are you reading at the moment?
TJ: A Life of Picasso, The Cubist Rebel 1907-1916 by John Richardson

AM: When are you happiest with your work?
TJ: On Sundays

AM: What’s your favorite place to travel to?
TJ: Europe -- Paris or Berlin

AM: What do you find most sexy?
TJ: Hott asses

AM: What’s your favorite piece of art that you own?
TJ: “Balzac’s Coffee Cup” by Elizabeth Peyton

AM: What is your favorite walk?
TJ: Up Broadway to Madison Square Park with my dog Harry

AM: When and where is your next show?
TJ: Soon
