Word of Mouth
bess

Bess has found the perfect location for their offbeat vintage collections, high-end jewelry and sculpture showroom in the former Keith Haring Pop-Shop location on Lafayette Street. Husband-and-wife team Doug and Bess Abraham, co-owners of the store and co-designers of the store's jewelry, have curated quite the experience. The store, now painted dark black, showcases a variety of vintage posters from concerts by Madonna, Diana Ross and '80s punk bands, alongside tempera paintings of Buddhist iconography created by over 100 monks per piece. Abraham Dupont jewelry, a line that Doug designs with Lauren Dupont, is African- and Indian-inspired, boasting beads made from wood to quartz, and is quite detailed. The jewelry comes with 18k-gold-plated clasps and looks like something you would see in a glossy-magazine gypsy story. Perhaps the best part of this charming store is its T-shirt collection. If you're in the market for vintage concert T's, head to Bess. Worn-out shirts from bands like Duran Duran, the Cure and Depeche Mode fill the rack. Most impressive is their cache of Vivienne Westwood/Malcolm McLaren Sex Pistols T's and gay-cowboy shirts. These are truly collector's pieces and come at corresponding prices ($85-$780). Other fun items include ceramic naked Jesus sculptures created by Herman Makkink for the film A Clockwork Orange and black-light neon posters of Jimi Hendrix and of other psychedelic doodles. This is truly a one-of-a-kind store, perhaps because everything they sell is, in fact, one of a kind. 292 Lafayette St., (212) 219-0723
