THE GRETA GARBO OF FASHION
By Kim Hastreiter
For those of you who don't know, Martin Margiela (who is incidentally one of my favorite designers) has, for twenty years refused to give interviews or be photographed. So despite growing a huge business, no one (or practically no one) knows what Margiela even looks like. At his atelier, Margiela has always been proudly egalitarian supposedly dressing his entire staff whether receptionists or design assistants in white lab coats. His whole philosophy was that design and creativity should be about the work and not about making the designer into a movie star. I've always loved this about Margiela but I've also always been desperately curious to meet the man. (Or at least see what he looks like.) Well yesterday, Womens Wear Daily did the unthinkable. Turns out they sent a photographer to "stake out" the front door of Maison Margiela for two full days photographing everyone who went in or out where'sWaldo-style from the messengers to accounting people to interns to designers looking for Margiela. They printed a full page of photos of these people and actually identified one of them as the elusive designer. And Voila, here he is: the Greta Garbo of fashion!
